In this photo I see our spirit of history. No doubt our first indigenous peoples stood on this same spot and also stared at the river, and like me, got lost in its beauty. But our first Native Americans also roamed this land, knew its hidden nooks and crannies, and no doubt revered the divinity found in the hills and valleys. They cherished the river and understood how to follow its pathways. Then the next era brought miners who combed through the land looking for an elusive metal that might promise a lifetime of comfort. Soon to follow were the rush of emigrants ready to settle where they could make a living. Each era had its own life, its own people, and its own unique spirit. Today, this view is a reminder of our past, our roots, and what has shaped our culture in this county we call home. It is our spirit of history.

My thoughts about history…

When children learn in the presence of an historic place or building, their minds are opened and expanded, and a chance is created for them to think in new ways about their world.

When adults take an interest in local history there’s a new sense of understanding that might not otherwise have occurred. This can lead to more involvement and more attention to the greater quality of life they can affect today.

When a community is given an opportunity to learn about their cultural heritage, they are given the gift of deeper appreciation, and ultimately inspiration, for the place they call home.

I believe history greatly contributes to the well-being of citizens. History can make the difference between a community we simply live in, and a community we love! It is the opportunity for strength and encouragement for our future.

Overall, it’s the Spirit of History that compels me. Placer County’s foundation is built on the spirit of our pioneers. Telling their stories and documenting their legacy, is an absolute honor and thrill for me.

Doug Wagemann, Founding President, Roseville Downtown Partnership - “This book captures the vibrant tapestry of Placer County’s history, offering a comprehensive journey through its highs and lows across the years. It skillfully preserves the essence of the county, highlighting the determination and hard work of its pioneers, which has shaped it into the remarkable place it is today. The inclusion of captivating ‘then and now’ photographs serves as a poignant reminder of both yesteryears and the present, ensuring the legacy of Placer County remains vivid and enduring for generations to come. A commendable achievement indeed!”

Kenneth C. Fisher, Roseville - “This book brought to life for me stories of a truly historic pioneer family who in 1855 settled in what is now Roseville. As I read, I could actually close my eyes and imagine myself walking in the exact footsteps the early Fiddyment family walked in, long before their precious land was overtaken by 20th and 21st Century development. I also now know where Fiddyment Road got its name! The story, as told by her great grandson, of a 19th Century widow with a toddler son, braving sea and land crossing to come to California is truly an amazing tale. The book left me wanting to learn the stories of other Placer County pioneers and the role they played in settling in this area in the 1800s. Great historic pictures also of the Roseville area.”
